There are two NGV museums. The much larger National Gallery of Victoria International (NGVI) and the smaller National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Both are art museums, with the NGV more focused on local art while the NGVI has a Victorian-era collection and hosts more foreign art exhibitions. Both museums are a tram stop away from each other. Both are worth dropping by if you enjoy art. But even if I put them together, I don’t consider them to be as interesting as Melbourne’s rival Sydney’s Gallery of New South Wales. Whoops. Honest travel opinion though. 😛

I don’t make a habit of taking pictures out of other people’s artwork, so these are just pictures that highlight the architecture or give an idea of how the exhibition spaces look like.

From the short visits I paid to both museums, the key differences are as follow. NGVI hosts more international art exhibitions. NGV is more focused on local Australian arts and events. NGVI has a better collection of Victorian-era art. NGV has a better collection of local contemporary art. Visitors should pay a visitor to both.

I’m back to making intermittent updates as I have been traveling for business. With the holidays around the corner, hopefully I will have more liberty to post more often soon. -WY
