Welcome to Qatar Doha, Hamad International Airport. This has become quite an active transit hub for air travel in the Middle East. Of course there is the problem of the recent politically-charged blockade made against it. Nevertheless, Qatar still has a strong physical advantage in the region. There are many people from different regions traveling around the world who still choose to transit here.

All things considered, the available amenities are fine. The airport’s transit area is sufficient to meet most travelers’ needs. I observe a higher-than-expected number of Chinese employees represented among the shops and staff, perhaps hinting at the rising number of Chinese travelers world-wide. It also makes sense that Qatar would be a natural transit hub between east and west.

In case you are wondering, the giant yellow teddy bear with a lamp on its head is called the “lamp bear”. It is understandably a photo magnet.

If we phrase our question specifically: “Will travelers have a good time here?” I’ll say that HIA is perfectly functional. But in terms of whether travelers have a good time, I’ll say some some airports in Asia edge it out. Cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore just excel at creating a better combination of shopping and F&B in their densely-populated urban metropolis, and this talent extends o their airports. But hey, don’t let this stop you from having your transit in HIA. Although I had the misfortune of suffering a 4-hour flight delay, this is still a pretty good airport to transit in.
